The risks of fitting your own car battery

Mistakes can often be made when changing your own car battery.

Car batteries can generally last for five years provided they are given proper maintenance. Its longevity is however also dependent on other factors such as the climate, the vehicles operation, how you use your vehicle (start regularity & distance travelled). Overcharging or undercharging the battery can also cause premature failure.

Before you consider doing it yourself, think of the following :

Do I have the necessary safety gear ?

Am i strong enough to lift the battery out and a new on in ?

Am I technically savvy to complete this ?

Do I have the necessary tools and devices ?

Am i prepared to accept the consequences if things go wrong ?

Is it just easier to get it done by the experts ?

Firstly, using a voltmeter, test the battery voltage, then start the car and test that the alternator is charging the battery correctly. Often people replace a battery due to a faulty alternator. If you have decided that it is your battery, then ensure you have a memory minder that ensures your vehicle retains its electronics and data before removing the old battery. The biggest risk with changing over a car battery is when trying to disconnect the dead battery in the wrong order. Before changing your car battery, you should ensure that the new battery you are replacing it with is fully charged. Then start with disconnecting the negative cable first followed by the positive cable. Undo any of the hold down clamps/brackets and ensure they are well clear of the battery terminals to avoid an accidental short. Be very careful not to drop or misplace the nuts. Lift the dead battery by removing it in an upright position. This is to prevent its acidic solution from leaking out. Respect the weight of the product when lifting as often its in an awkward position and can easily cause an injury to your back or hands. Place the old battery in a safe place to avoid contact with acid residue. You can then place the new battery at the position of the former one.

How safe is your car battery?

Apart from containing sulphuric acid which can be harmful to your skin or equipment, during operation and charging of your car battery, or any lead acid battery, batteries produce hydrogen and oxygen which occupies the top head space in a battery, above the electrolyte and plate structure.

If these gasses are not vented correctly or are exposed to a source of ignition/spark, a battery explosion can occur. Quality Batteries are the safest option but it is important to care for your new battery, in the right way.

INTERNAL IGNITION

Although less likely, it is possible to have an ignition inside the car battery if there is electrical shorting between battery plates. This can occur when there is 1) an old neglected or continuously overcharged battery; 2) A damaged battery that has plates touching internally creating a short with an internal ignition source; 3) a sudden impact that damages the battery; and 4) excessive vibration over time in hi-use applications such as commercial batteries, agricultural batteries and even your marine battery.

EXTERNAL IGNITION

Any ignition source in the zone, where hydrogen is within its explosive range, increases the likelihood of an external battery explosion. If a path to inside the battery exists, for instance for a vented battery, the flame front may continue into the casing, igniting any gases in the battery housing, and increasing pressure inside the battery casing. The casing, not designed to withstand this pressure and will probably explode, potentially injuring bystanders and causing significant damage to your vehicle.

For a VRLA battery (Valve Regulated Lead Acid Batteries) an external flame can't enter the sealed battery casing. The vent valve releases one way only, and only small quantities of gas will be released. In the unlikely event gas from the vent valve is ignited, it will not be contained and no solids or chemicals will be propelled.

Like most things in life, the cheapest car battery is not necessarily the best option. Buying a good quality battery mostly delivers better value for your dollar, and a safer option.
